The Perfect Mint Julep

Mint Julep

What You'll Need: 
2 cups crushed ice
2 ounces of your favorite bourbon (I like Woodford Reserve) 
1 ounce mint simple syrup (add less if too sweet) 
fresh mint sprigs, to garnish 
How To: 
In a silver mint julep cup or highball glass:
add the mint simple syrup,
add 1 cup crushed ice,
 add bourbon,
add remaining 1 cup ice,
garnish with mint sprig. 
For those of you who find it too sweet, try half as much simple syrup.
Some other alterations are:
Muddle honey and mint in your glass in place of simple syrup.
Add a splash of sparkling or soda water to give it a refreshing fizz on a hot day. 

Mint Simple Syrup 

What You'll Need: 
1 1/2 - 2 cups fresh mint leaves
1 cup water
1 cup sugar 
How To: 
Roughly chop mint, enough to release the oils,
add chopped mint, sugar, and water to a small sauce pan,
bring mixture to a boil while stirring until all the sugar has dissolved, 
turn stove down and simmer for about 2 minutes (do not stir),
remove from heat and let cool, 
once cool drain through a mesh strainer, or even cheese cloth, to remove mint leaves, 
store in a sealed container in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.
